Club Kahani
Fall 2023 | Berkeley, CA
September 8 - December 15
Club Kahani is a weekly gathering for 8-13 year old South Asian girls. We bring the stories of South Asian women from the past and present to life through fun activities including art, mindfulness, STEM, and movement. Over the course of 3 months, we help our Kahani Scouts share their own experiences through multimedia storytelling and create a digital magazine together. Along the way, our scouts build lifelong friendships, receive supportive mentorship, and discover a pantheon of South Asian women from history to stay inspired by.

We welcome Scouts with any connection to South Asia (which includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan). Our curriculum is informed by and supports many experiences of being South Asian (including mixed race families, different religious and caste backgrounds, campers who feel ambivalent about being South Asian, etc.)
Why Club Kahani
Our programs measurably increase girls’ self-esteem, self-image, and confidence.
We conducted impact assessment on how our camp affected our campers and learned that they showed significant increases in standard scales of self-esteem, self-image, and self-confidence.
10 things our Scouts get from participating:
A digital magazine they make together with art and stories representing their lives, their families, and the history of South Asian women from the diaspora. They leave this 3-month program with experience creating and publishing media that represents their experiences.
A workbook with the South Asian stories they learn about, and storytelling activities they can continue to do after the program.
A mindfulness toolkit with exercises they practice in the club that they can use lifelong to regulate emotions, manage change, and reflect on their experiences
Art & crafts inspired by the South Asian stories they hear
Cooking classes & recipes from other South Asian families in the Bay Area
Dance, yoga, and physical movement to keep them active
Lifelong friends and mentors who will support them as they grow
Communication & leadership skills to share their stories and listen to the stories of others within their families, communities, and beyond
A map of South Asian Bay Area including field trips that we take in and around Berkeley
Continued community after the fall through our spring club and summer camp
Testimonials
Parents love us!
“It is a great initiative to help young girls explore their identity and feel confident about who they are. My daughter had a wonderful experience and loved her teacher. Thank you for organizing this.”
Kids love us even more!
“About two months ago, I would feel a bit self-conscious about one part of myself, but now being with you all has made that part extra special. Thank you.”
